WHO ARE YOU REALLY
Written by: Katie Hess
Can I ask you something? Who are you, really?
I’m not asking for your name or what you do, I want to know what makes you, you! Take a moment, and just think of how you would describe yourself.
If you had asked me this question about 5-6 years ago, some words that probably would’ve come to mind are insecure, unworthy, unlovable, lost, and insignificant. Of course, that wouldn’t have been what I actually told you because I was super good at putting on a happy face and faking it to make it look like I had it all together.
Sound familiar? If so, you’re not alone, and I think this will be a really fun read for you. So let’s continue, shall we?
Identity. That’s a word I had a really hard time with for a LONG time. I’m the youngest of four. There’s my oldest brother, Andy, my brother, Robby, and my sister, Kelly. For years I walked through life trying to live up to the standards they had set, because to me it looked as if they had it all figured out. I thought if I just lived a life that looked like theirs, I would be just fine! The problem with this is that I actually wasn’t created to be another Andy, Robby, or Kelly. I was created to be Katie.
Not only was I trying to live up to my siblings, but I saw all the different standards the world was throwing at me, and as the world changed, I tried my hardest to change with it to fit in. I got so caught up in chasing after everyone else’s pictures of identity, that I completely missed the fact that I actually had my own identity to discover.
The actual definition of identity is, “the distinguishing character or personality of an individual.” So by definition, when we’re trying to make our identity exactly like someone else’s, we directly contradict the very idea of an identity! We are all created uniquely and beautifully to have our own characteristics and personality traits that are unlike anyone else’s! Let that sink in... Let the weight of false-identity fall off your shoulders. There’s no need to try & live like everyone else, because you are meant to be only YOU!
The Lord created you to be fully YOU so that He can delight in all that YOU are. He didn’t create you to be like someone else so He can delight in them all over again. One of my favorite verses ever (I love it so much we have it up on our daughter’s wall), Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born, I set you apart...”
Guys, before we were even a thought, God knew exactly who we were meant to be. Before we were even on earth, He set us apart. He set us apart to be different, to stand out in a crowd, to be fully alive and fully free!
If being yourself is a scary thought, I would love to put your mind at ease and give you a little picture of what you step into by being fully you as a child of God...
Blessings and a secure future: Psalm 16:5-6, “Lord, you are my portion and my cup of blessing; you hold my future.”
Peace: Romans 5:1, “Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Provision: 2 Corinthians 9:8, “And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may succeed.”
Salvation: Romans 10:9, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Steadfast love and mercy: Lamentations 3:22, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end.”
And there is so much more! (But you would be reading a book instead of a blog if I shared everything!)
If you feel like you’re missing any of these things in your life, I would encourage you to seek out what your true identity in Christ looks like. Pay attention to what brings you the most joy and what makes you feel the most alive, and most likely, those are things that the Lord has gifted you with and would love to see you walking in!
You carry a unique part of the body of Christ that no one else carries. It’s something that was intrinsically given to you. But that’s not all that makes you, you… The life that you have lived has equipped you and given you something that no one else has as well. Your life, your journey, is one that only you have lived. No one else can say that they have the same story that you do. The uniqueness you carry is vital to the body of Christ because you carry a unique likeness of the Father. We are all different, but we are all made in the image of our Father. This means that if you are being fully you, you’re carrying a piece of the image of God that no one else does!
So, find joy in who you are. Be encouraged that the Creator of the Universe chose YOU and set YOU apart for greatness. Don’t let the world tell you all the things you should be, but instead, allow the One who loves you with a perfect love to tell you all the things you are and all the things that you could be.
It might feel odd at first when you allow yourself to come fully alive, because most of us have spent so much time trying to be someone else. But remember, give yourself grace in the process. Love the things you love, even if no one else loves them. Laugh at the things you think are funny, even if no one else is laughing. Pursue the things you want to pursue, even if no one else is pursuing them. Be the loud one. Be the quiet one. Be the sweet one. Be the crazy one. Let the Lord tell you the truths about who you are and just BE YOU!
So going back to the question I asked you at the beginning... Who are you really?
I’ll tell you some things that make me, me. I am a child of God. I am amazing. I carry the fire of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes I’m loud, sometimes I’m quiet. Sometimes I love to be around people, sometimes I don’t! I love cheesy, dramatic TV shows and I love puns. I love to dream, explore new places, and eat healthy. I also love to stay in bed all day, watch movies, and eat junk food. I’m a worshipper and the Lord has given me an anointing to sing. I am growing and I am fully loved through the process. I am a daughter. I am prophetic. I am a good friend and a good listener. I am worthy of love. I am a great mom who loves my baby girl more than I can even explain. I am a supportive and loving wife that is constantly amazed by my husband, and somehow my love for him grows and grows every day. There is no one else like me!
Now I know some of these things seem silly, but getting to a place where I could actually say and agree with them took a long time. It took me dying to myself and who I thought I should be, and in turn letting the Lord speak louder about who I really am. But it’s not just about letting Him speak, it’s about accepting the things He’s said and continues to say! I know the Lord knows me better than I know myself, so I know He is the best source of truth in discovering my true identity.
I encourage you to really start thinking about the things that make you you, and to write them out. If the things you think and say don’t line up with the Word and who Father God says you are, try asking the Lord what He thinks about you, and get in the Word to find the truth that will replaces the lies! Love yourself for the things that make you stand out, and maybe even consider that the things that make you stand out are the things that the Lord has put inside you that set you apart like He said in Jeremiah 1:5. You are a beautiful and unique creation that the Lord takes pride in and delights in! Now go be YOU!
